Maureen has lived and participated in Bankside civil society for over 40 years, she has won many accolades for her community work, especially her Youth work, nurturing such talent as the Boxing Champion David Hayes as well as the current Chair of the Bankside Residents’ Forum, Amir Eden.

 

For over 30 years Maureen founded and single handily ran the youth club, the Union of Youth. The Union of Youth has produced world class Irish Dancers such as The Carragher Academy. Maureen was instrumental in establishing the Carragher Academy in 2005.

 

Maureen also ran a football team associated with the Union of Youth which competed against other youth clubs in Southwark.

 

With the inception of Southwark Alliance, Maureen was appointed as the representative for Borough and Bankside and served for four years.

 

She was also the Co-founder of Mothers Against Guns, campaigning for the reduction of gun crime in London. In her work relating to crime reduction, Maureen served as a representative for young people and also sat on the critical incident panel. 

 

Maureen currently serves as a director of Bankside Residents’ Forum having initially been involved in its early stages.

 

She is also a committee member of the Bankside Festival Association.

 

For her long standing community work Maureen has been awarded:

 

  • Honoured Citizen of Southwark

  • Leader for London

  • Champion for Change

  • Millennium Fellow

  • Mayor of London’s award for peace on the streets
